Feelin' Peachy

My aunt and grandparents are visiting from DC for the Thanksgiving holiday. This morning I was sitting with my grandmother as she was telling me about the screenplay that she’s been working on. It’s a love story part of which takes place in the Middle East. As she delved into plot details, I had trouble focusing on what she was saying, however, this time I don’t think it was the Chemo Brain. As she described beautiful scene, all I could think about was Iranian food, Iranian food, Iranian food! You see, the last few days I’ve been on a drug called Dexamethasone (sounds deadly, doesn’t it? I can just see my doctors standing over me proclaiming “My name is Dexamethasone, you killed my father, prepare to die!”) Anyway, one of the side effects of these dangerous pills is “overeating that may lead to significant weight gain.” Besides that, my roommate’s mom just made me this huge delicious pot of lentils, which I have been religiously consuming day and night. Despite being on low doses of this medication, mere overeating does not describe my recent behavior. I have been gorging myself with everything in sight. As I chew, food is falling from my mouth left and right. My stomach is an echoing bottomless pit, and the scale must be broken because there is no way that I’ve gained six pounds in three days.

Other than that, my head has been acting pretty funky lately. Instead of growing stubble, it’s been sprouting this strange fuzz which weirdly enough reminds me of peaches, James and the Giant Peach, and peach cobbler. Yummm. I’m pretty concerned about it though. What if my hair never grows back? What if it grows too fast? What if it gets moldy?

I’m going to the hospital tomorrow and I’m not looking forward to it. I have a follow up chemo treatment but it shouldn’t take too long. All I can really think about though is going to my favorite vegan restaurant, The Chicago Diner, and stuffing my face with a humongous veggie burger the size of my head.

  1. Well I'm sure you can afford to gain a few pounds, plus it is the holiday season, doesn't everyone gain at least 15lbs this time of year? LoL! I'm really sorry you have to go through all of this though, it doesn't sound like much fun :-( I'm sure your hair will be back in no time, and I don't think it'll get moldy :-) Enjoy that burger and Happy Thanksgiving!

  2. First of all, I love the Princess Bride reference!!! Secondly, I know someone who had the "peach fuzz" after chemo, and her hair grew back perfectly fine later on. Apparently it's a common thing, so don't worry about that. And as soon as you're able to, I say we make that Chicago Diner dream a reality.

  4. Dear Gabi,

I am Kevin Crews's Mom. I met you at his graduation party. Kevin pointed me to your blog and I love your writing. Maybe Kevin has told you that I was treated for breast cancer almost 5 years ago now. I can very much relate to your physical and emotional struggles. I had 4 rounds of chemo and I went through many of the same things you have. The first round was easy! But that third round knocked me on my butt and kept kicking me down. The only reason I went back for the 4th round was because I knew it would be my last. I lost all my hair too and it has come back nicely. It was curly at first and then it straightened out after a few months.
I have some funny stories about when I was bald. I know you have a wonderful support group in your friends and family, but if you ever want to talk, I'd love to chat with you. You can email me at afranks50@gmail.com or get in touch with me through Kevin.
You have an amazing spirit and a beautiful soul. Feel good and keep writing!

    God Bless,

    Andrea Franks

  5. Dear Gabby,
This is Bella (Bani). The eating sounds delicious. I really love that you are blogging. Hit me up anytime if you would ever like to chat. And I am POSTIVE that your STUNNING hair will grow back even more beautifully than it was before.

Gabby's hair > Bani's hair. I always felt that way. Take care hot mama.
